TSA: Snow Globes Banned. EPIC FAIL! [Nov. 15th, 2009|11:25 pm]

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/travel/2010260025_websnow12.html

Pity the lowly snow globe with white flakes raining down on a snowman or Santa Claus tucked inside its liquid dome.

Try packing this favorite travel souvenir in your carry-on luggage and taking it through an airport security checkpoint this holiday season, and chances are you'll have to leave it behind.

"Snow globes are not permitted to be carried through security checkpoints," said Transportation Security Administration spokesman Dwayne Baird.

The reason is that the globes contain liquids, and TSA rules say that only liquids, gels or aerosols in containers of three ounces or less are allowed through security in carry-on bags.

NaNo Day 15 part 2 [Nov. 15th, 2009|10:18 pm]

WOO! I rock the wordcount. I got the 2500 words I wanted, and I got to do a meaty scene torturing one of my characters. *eg* Torture, it's what's for dinner! There are things I need to tweak, but I'll do that later. For now, I've got what I wanted on screen, and that rocks my socks off.

I actually think that I could/can do 2K a day when I've got the story in my head the way this one is. This story has marinated for a year, at least, and that's probably too long. I think the next novel I'm planning to write (the rewrites of Blood of the Chosen) may have the same "long marinating time" issues, and thus I can probably write it this fast, too. New stories? Not so much-- but these two, that I've lived with so long, I do not think this speed is hurting them. *sage nod* I don't think NaNo is for every project, and I am starting to know when it's a good idea to do it and when it's not, but I definitely think it helps when you've got a project that you need momentum for.

Now I get to go watch Cats 101 (we recorded the one that was on last night) with my hubby after I put aloe on my sunburn. It's the little things that make me happy. :D

The updated wordcount:

28075 / 50000 words. 56% done!

This is one of those wonderful catch 22's. In the Supreme Court case Castle Rock vs. Gonzalez. It has been proven that it is not the police's job to protect us. However in many states you can be charged with assault or murder for attempting to protect yourself and/or your property.

I find that particular catch 22 appalling.

I won't until I Do! [Nov. 15th, 2009|08:17 pm]

onlylonging
A few weeks ago I spent some time with my family and took several walks around the neighborhood with my little brother Cody, currently age fifteen and a freshman in high school. On one walk we ran into one of his friends, and they began discussing which color was superior of the bracelets they received from a guest speaker at school earlier that day. The rubber wristbands for a cause read "I won't until 'I DO'". While Cody's friend walked with us I did not vocalize my interest but my mind steadily filled with questions. Carefully I began to get more information when again it was just my brother and I. "Can I see the bracelet. I like that color too. Where'd you get it exactly?"
"We had a guest speaker in health class."
"Oh yeah, who was it?"
"I don't know, some lady."
"Well, what did she talk about?"
"It’s dangerous to have sex, don't do it until you are married and you shouldn't get married until you are 30."
"Really? Do you agree?"
"That's what she said."
"Right, you don't think she might be wrong?"
"Um, I don't know!"
“Well, even if you aren't planning on having sex, do you know anything about condoms? Maybe you should keep some around just in case..." "Gross, sister!"
"No, Cody, it is not gross. Sex can be dangerous but it is not intrinsically so if you understand safe sex practices."
"I don't want to talk about it anymore."
"Ok, we'll talk about it another time."

Uncertain when I will have the chance to talk to my brother again, I decided to start preparing myself by looking into the Gwinnett County Public Schools Academic Knowledge and Skills Curriculum. Under the course information on Intro to Health sexuality is mentioned in two subcategories, Disease Prevention and Family Life. Two of the three bullet points for Disease Prevention read as follows: assess prevalence, modes of transmission, symptoms and diagnostic tests for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV. Assess methods of prevention for contracting sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, with particular emphasis on abstinence as the only sure way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Under Family Life there are two mentions out of six bullet points: explain the need to make conscious decisions regarding sexuality based on family values, personal responsibilities, self interests and future goals. Review the nature and purposes of dating including family guidelines, functions of dating, coping with the pressures, and the importance of setting standards for controlling sexual behavior.

This curriculum classifies itself as comprehensive sex education. Organizations like the American Medical Association, the American Public Health Association, and the National School Boards Association suggest sexual education should start in the home. Yet, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey in 2000, 79% of parents want their children to learn about sexual orientation in sexuality education classes at school. It seems the information provided to Cody is heteronormative and narrow in scope. Depending on the language used by the instructor there is also a strong likelihood that scare tactics or misinformation are in use when discussing STI prevention.

Sexual education is a result of the Progressive era of the early 1900s, a scientific origin focused on increasing hygiene and behavioral awareness to reduce the spread of venereal diseases. Disease prevention is a crucial aspect of sexual education however it is merely that, an aspect, if we are talking about a thorough communication of knowledge on the subject.

I’ve talked to my parents. They loathe the subject. They have only addressed matters of sexuality with Cody in joking ways. It is not a preposterous assumption that most teens or younger get information about sex from each other, or mass media. I guess what I’m getting at is this. I want to help my brother become a healthy and functional sexual adult. As an open minded person who spends some leisure time evaluating information and arguments on sexuality I think I am preparing myself to the best of my ability. I sense there is a far larger issue and am appalled by the innumerous articles about the fight over comprehensive sex education. There is too much attention devoted to what kids should not know. Instead of complaining or trying to conceal information let’s admit kids know stuff or will figure it out and deal with that accordingly!

An additional thought:

I'm concerned that an earlier conversation I had with my brother has negatively impacted my credibility on the subject matter or his comfort with discussing it with me. A few years ago Cody told me he had learned in school about the "penis hole". I impulsively ranted about how the vagina is not an empty receptacle for male genitalia! I think it is pertinent to eliminate gender bias and any traces of disgust when discussing sexuality but it is no simple task to be aware of how society shapes our understanding of sex and gender identity. Demonstrating awareness AND handling the subject delicately- well, I have my work cut out for me and I'm not an educator nor a parent!

for a game to play on New Year's Eve. we all list out all the really shitty things that happened to us this year and then compare. we vote on a "shittiest year" award, and then get really drunk while we burn the lists and hopefully banish all this fucking bad ju-ju we somehow all caught in 2009.

We went to Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum today. That was fun.

I even won something on a crane machine on my first try. Never won anything on a crane machine before, but this time I did.

If you have time and inclination (and you're in the area), I suggest having a look at it.

excellent. as if my stress levels haven't been elevated enough lately...

#5 reports, after an overnight stay with my grandparents, that my grandfather's driving is now BAD!

he doesn't drive very far, but she said his braking was always too late, and his acceleration is no longer smooth.

i will have to brainstorm a solution for them. coming up with a good solution will then facilitate their own decision to go into an assisted living facility. i feel that this is a decision that one of THEM must put on the table. it has been discussed in the past as an option for the future, but the future has come, i think.

and now i need to go look for the aspirin, as i have a bad headache.

NaNo Day 15 part 1 [Nov. 15th, 2009|05:14 pm]

miintikwa
[Current Mood | blah]

I'm writing, but I have been tagged, so I'm going to do this meme first, and then write more after.

I ended up with a little more than 500 words yesterday, with about 130 before midnight, and the rest before 1am. I went to bed at around 1am, watched a little bit of a very old (2000-ish) David Caruso movie (which, I'll admit, I didn't try very hard to follow the plot of-- it was more 'aww, look, he wore sunglasses in this movie! How cute! zzzz'), and then crashed out. I'm wickedly sore today, and while I'd planned on going to the write-in, I have pretty much decided that I'm going to chill at home and do what writing I can here. I want to hit 2500 today, so I can keep my 2000-word lead on the 'you should have this many words written so far' recommendations.

So, meme, for which I was tagged by [info]robinskij:

FIRST: If you've been tagged, you must write your answers in your own LJ and replace any question that you dislike with a new, original question.
SECOND: Tag eight sexy people. Don't refuse to do that like a pansy.

I like pansies. And I honestly haven't been keeping up with LJ well enough to know who hasn't done it, hate tagging people who've already been tagged, and I have too may friends who are also doing NaNo and thus probably won't even read this if I tagged them. *g*

Who sleeps in bed next to you?
C, and usually Koga and Kisuke sleep on the bed with us. Occasionally Ichigo will sleep on the bed, too.

What did you last eat?
Pancakes, scrambled eggs, and a sausage patty.

What kind of books do you read?
I'm a reading slut. I read everything, from fluffy romance novels to popular fiction a la Dan Brown, to hardcore sex-filled paranormal romance a la Keri Arthur, to fantasy staples like Mercedes Lackey, to things that push my boundaries-- things I don't generally "like:" westerns, hardcore sci-fi (with a lot of science). I also read a lot of non-fiction. I'm currently reading a book by Paul Ekman, and two books I saw on Stephen Colbert (Low Impact Man and the Year of Living Biblically).

If you could be anywhere right now, where would it be?
Atlanta, visiting [info]davidmadly

When is your birthday?
It just passed. November 13th. And thank you all again for the lovely birthday wishes! :D

Name one odd item within five feet of you.
A tiny black cast-iron cauldron... or the stuffed beanie-baby wolf.

What's your current fandom / obsession / addiction?
Lie to Me

What did you really want to do today that you didn't?
I haven't accomplished my writing goal yet... but there's plenty of day left.

What's your favorite holiday?
Halloween

What websites do you always visit when you go online?
Google (for research), gmail, livejournal, facebook, City of Heroes forums, Windy City Gridiron, Sports Illustrated, Bloodhorse, ESPN.com... Oh! Buc'Em blog. Aaaand one other site I'm just not going to mention. But some of y'all know about it. >:)

If you could have any pet, what would it be?
Other than the catmonsters and the dog, I'd like a farm where I could either have a horse or be close enough to share a lease.

What do you want right this minute, off the top of your head?
To know the rest of the plot to my book, and be able to write it better than I am at the moment.

Where is the place you like to return in order to calm down / relax / etc.?
My back porch

What's one thing that terrifies you that nobody else gets?
being buried alive

What color is your cell phone
silver and black, at the moment, but I really want a case for it... in red.

Are there any bits of childhood that you miss?
The healthy body

What is your favorite kind of weather?
Days like yesterday: clear, the sun is warm but there's a cool breeze, and it's not too hot.

What's on your playlist at the moment?
Mostly Amethystium and stuff like that, except that Dave Matthews' Band "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King" is awesome writing music, and I love that album so much. I could write to DMB all day. And I really need to download the list of artists that I've been putting off going to our subscription site and downloading stuff from, because I have been waiting for Shakira's new album to come out. *twitch* I love her new song. I know, I know. But whew.

The Host, My Computer [Nov. 15th, 2009|04:46 pm]

[Current Mood | cheerful]

Okay so, I've been without my own computer for about a few weeks, which is why I haven't been able to put up more chapter recaps. I was able to use my friends computer's for other posts, but all of my host files were on mine and it made no sense to re-upload and re-download things when I could just wait for it to come back from the shop. The reason it was in the shop is because I caught a virus that surprisingly isn't porn-related.

I know. It shocked my friends too.

"Dude, are you sure it wasn't because you downloaded Voluptuous Vixens Numb-.."

"FOR THE 50th TIME, I'M SURE."

"Okay."

"......"

"....."

"....Dude, are you sure?"

I'm reading and typing up the next three chapters now, so I should be done soon. With pics included.
