You know, critics are easily dismissed. I dare you to find a quote that SUPPORTS critics. :P That's a real challenge.
Problem being I'm not fond of critics, I'm really not. I agree with the statement, thus why I posted it. I can see the appeal for players, and I adore some of those players, you included. But as for the concept of critics themselves? Unwilling to do it themselves they instead choose to tear apart the works of those willing to try?
Loathing is too mild a term. They inspire in me a bright and burning hatred, because they are more than willing to claim the ground of taste and knowledge but are unwilling to risk anything by actually creating anything, unless they tried and failed and now this is how they get their little revenge. I'm a firm believer in put up or shut up- you wanna criticize my work, let's see you do better and show me how it's done. Nitpicking the artist's labors from the sidelines is cowardly and all too easy- after all, opinions abound, and the bum in the street has one too, without benefit of credentials.
Ugh, 3 Am and I am talking in circles now. As for a quote that supports critics? I suspect you would be hard pressed to find one- even from other critics. After all, why would they be of any more use to one another than they are to the world?

And while this may seem vehement, please, please don't take it personally. It isn't a rant against you, I promise, nor is it passive aggressively against your character. I just fucking hate critics, and when this popped up today it placed it in context for me, so I posted it with the poseur tag.
Okay, 3 am. Go to bed and try this again when not so beat and more liable to make sense.
Oh, I'm not taking it personally. And I hate critics as well. It's been a real struggle for me to try to play something that really doesn't make sense. I try to weave it to be something almost...mystical. Like the art itself speaks when it's a masterpiece, and that's all I really judge. Whether or not it can stand the test of time and be a masterpiece instead of another piece of art. And I don't have any schooling for it, and I find most art boring, and I really like the dark art (which my character is all squeamish about). So no worries there! I completely agree. It's been a real struggle to be able to justify why there are critics and why everyone can't just enjoy what they enjoy, and leave it be. Like wine. Everyone's pallets are different. I'm thinking critics are around to help validate artists who area all jealous of each other and just cut each other down. However, then critics cut things down too. *le sigh* I'm going in circles too. *lol*
Huh. Now, to hear this perspective is very interesting to me in that you work so hard on something that makes no sense to you just to get the character goals in line. That's good stuff there, given some of your IC arguments that I've read.
